Faction is very
important in the world of Norrath. It
affects who will sell to you and the prices
they will charge. Also some people won't
give you quests until they know you are
someone they can trust. Factions often
intertwine with other factions. Many are
opposed to one another, so helping one will
ruin the other, while others could care less
about anyone else.
Faction Basics:
There are 8 levels to how a faction likes
you. From worst to best they are:
Scowls at you, ready to attack! (Kill on
sight.)
Glares at you threateningly.
Glowers at you dubiously. (won't kill on
sight.)
Glances at you apprehensively (merchants will
sell for inflated prices.)
Regards you indifferently.
Regards you amiable. (Merchants will give
you a deal on stuff.)
Regards you warmly.
Looks upon you Kindly.
Regards you as an Ally. (best)
Faction can be increased by killing
creatures or doing quests. Whenever you
complete a quest or defeat a creature you
will be notified of what factions you have
just raised or lowered. There are no hidden
faction hits, so you don't have to worry
about lowering any important factions
without your knowledge.
3 things affect your base faction, Race,
Religion, Class. Race faction hits are the
hardest to overcome, Religion is the next
hardest, and class is the easiest to
overcome.
You can tell which one the NPC hates you for
when they attack you. They will say
something like "Dark elves like you have
ruined your own lands, you will not ruin
mine!"
You never start off KOS to any faction in
your hometown, though it may be easy to
lower some of them more than others.
Faction Questing:
Faction Questing is often tedious and not
very rewarding. it involves doing the same
thing, either a quest or killing a certain
type of creature, for long periods of time.
If you are an Evil character It's often
necessary to work on some faction if you
wish to travel a lot. There are many good
places to hunt next to good towns, so if you
can shop, bind, and bank in the town it will
save you a lot of running.
Some classes have skills that really help
out Faction questing go faster.
Rogues- sneak. Sneak will raise you faction
to indifferent with almost all NPCs as long
as you are behind them (or invisible, but
you can't trade or sell while invisible.)
Monks - Sneak, Feign Death. Sneak works the
same as for rogues, Feign death will also
raise your faction to indifferent, but I've
heard they may be changing this.
Enchanters- Illusion spells, Faction raising
spell, Gate, Mez. The Illusions can get
around race faction hits, and the faction
raising spell can overcome some of the other
faction hits you may have. Gate is very
useful in faction questing since a lot of
them involve running between several NPCs.
It will cut travel time in half. Mez will
make an NPC indifferent for a short period
of time.
Druid- Wolf form, Gate, teleport spells.
Wolf form will make you indifferent with
most NPC's. IT won't work in Halas or on
Kunark. Gate and the teleport spells can cut
travel time by a great deal for faction
questing.
Wizards, mages, and Necros are good at
dealing damage, so you can take out a lot of
creatures quickly and have gate to cut
travel time for faction quests in half.
Shamans and clerics just have gate.
Shadowknights- Sneak
Bards- Sneak, They can also use Illusion
masks which work just like enchanter
illusions.
Warriors, Beastlords, and Paladins don't
really have any skills that can help them,
so they will either need to get help or take
the long path.
Some other comments
about raising your faction:
Raising your faction is a long and arduous
process... at least for Melees. You will
have to do a lot of running around and will
more than likely need help from other
players to do this, unless you are a rogue.
You will need money, several quests require
just buying something cheap, but handing in
a lot of them, so you will be spending
money.
Also when killing some of these low level
mobs there are usually some camps of them
that are good for lots of faction gains
pretty quickly. They are usually camped, so
as a service to the people trying to get XP
you may want to pull for them or ask if you
can at least hit the mob for faction before
they kill it.
Casters have it easy. With gate you can cut
travel time in half. Just bind near one of
the NPC's you get an item from and gate back
after you turn it in.
Also when fighting Faction mobs, If you are
pretty powerful, just use an AOE spell and
watch the mobs fall raising your faction
while all you do is lift a finger.
