| Basic Combat Guide |
Introduction:
This guide will teach you the basics of combat in Everquest. I have broken it up into 3 parts, melee combat, Magic combat, and common abilities. The only way to advance your character in EQ is through combat, so it is important to know what to do.
Common Abilities:
Con System:
One aspect of combat that is used in both melee and magic is the con system. It is important to con every NPC you want to fight so you know if you stand a chance or not. To con an NPC target them then hit either the con key or right click them. When you do so a message will appear in the chat box which tells you your faction standing with the target, and how hard/easy the fight would be. The messages are also color-coded and are based on a comparison of your level with theirs. The code goes:
[green]...., Looks like an easy fight[/green] (Way lower level)
[light blue] ..., Looks like an easy fight[/light blue] (gives minimal XP, lower level)
[blue] ..., Looks like a formidable opponent.[/blue] (lower level, but close to yours.)
[white] ..., Looks like an even fight.[/white] or [black]..., Looks like an even fight.[/black] (Same level as you, the color depends on what screen mode you are in.)
[yellow] ..., This will be a tough fight.[/yellow] (higher level, but close to yours.)
[red] ..., What do you want on your tomb stone.[/red] (everything else.)
Targeting:
Another common command that is used by both is targeting. To target an NPC, or PC, either click on them with the cursor or hit F8. (F7 for PCs) if you want to affect someone you have to target them first. When the NPC is targeted their name and HP bar will appear in the targeting window and the name over their head will start flashing.
Hot Keys:
Hot keys play an important part in combat too. It makes it easier to access the different abilities of your character. To create a hot key you just need to left click and hold the ability you want to hot key. After a second or two it will appear on your cursor. You can then drop it on a hot key slot. You can activate them by either clicking on the hot key or hitting the number key associated with it. (1-0)
Common Controls:
1. Con key - Default is C or right click on target.
2. Targeting - F8 for Naps, F7 for PCs, or click with the mouse. (Left click just targets them, right also cons them.)
3. Hot keys - Left click and hold an ability to create a hot key.
Melee combat:
There are three types of melee attacks, Auto attack, Ranged Attacks, and Special attacks. Auto attack everyone has, it starts your melee attack with whatever weapon you have equipped, or hands if no weapon is equipped, and ends when your target is dead or you hit the Auto attack button again.
To make a ranged attack you will need to make a hot key of your ranged weapon then click on it to fire. Your ranged attack button will gray out until the delay time is up, then you can fire the weapon again.
Special attacks are something else you need to make a hot key for. You find them under the combat menu. There are several different special attacks that you can get depend on your class and level. Some special attacks are: Kick, Bash, Round kick, Taunt, etc...
When you use the attack the hot key will gray out until the recycle time is up, then it is ready for use again. You can only use one special attack at a time, so if you have more then one the other buttons will gray out with the one you used.
Melee combat controls:
1. Auto Attack - (Default is A)
4. Left Click - Select a target, use ability.
5. Right Click - Con target, can also use the con key. (Default is C)
4. 1-0 - Hot key buttons, used to activate special abilities or ranged attack
*Note* there is a Ranged attack button in the combat menu, but I've never seen it work. The best way is to just hotkey the ranged slot.
Melee Combat tips:
1. Move the auto attack button to a not often used key. I usually pick Q since I rarely use it and it's right next to my hot key buttons.
2. Always check your target before attacking. Sometimes you may target the wrong character and that can lead to disastrous results. (Like attack a guard when you wanted the Orc pawn next to him.)
Magic Combat:
Compared to Melee combat, using spells is pretty easy. To use magic you need to learn the spell, memorize it, then cast it. Magic in EQ is a point-based system. Each spell takes up so many points of Mana to cast. If a spell is successful then the mana is subtracted from your mana bar, the blue bar under your HP bar. If the spell Fizzles then half the mana cost is taken from your mana bar. IF you interrupt the spell no mana is taken and the spell fails.
Learning Spells:
To learn a new spell you just need to buy the spell scroll from the appropriate spell vendor, each class has it's own spell list, then you need to enter your spell book and drop it on an open slot. Once you finish learning the spell you will be able to make it one of the 8 memorized spells you can cast.
Memorizing spells:
To memorize spells, open up your spell book and select the spell you want to be able to cast then drop it in one of the 8 slots on the memorized bar. The memorizing timer will count down then the icon will appear. When you first memorize a spell it will be grayed out and you will have to wait for the recycle time to expire before you can cast it.
Casting spells:
Once the spell is memmed it is ready to be cast. You can do this by either clicking on the icon in the memorized window or make a hot key for that spell. To make the hot key just click and hold on the memorized spell slot then drop the button in an open hot key.
Magic Combat Controls:
1. Spell book - Click on button in the memmed spell window. (New UI)
Click on Spell book in windowed mode. (Old UI)
/book or /page # (either)
Make a hot key
2. Alt key - Shows the names of the spell icons.
3. Right click - Un-mems spell. Hold down right click to view details of a spell. In Spell books right clicking allows you to moves spells around. (Right click the spell you want to move, then where you want to move it. if there is a spell there it will switch the two around.)
4. Left click - Used to cast a spell, select a target, or select a spell in the spell book to memorize.
