So. You want to know something about rangers. Aye, I can help with that.

First, though, if you want some story about how a ranger's life is carefree and happy, nothing but skipping through the forest singing songs and petting raccoons, you've come to the wrong place. We don't do that. If anyone's tra-la-ing through the woods, it's probably a bard, or maybe a druid who's been nibbling the fermented berries, and they've only got that luxury because there's a ranger out in front somewhere, breaking trail.

That's us, the ones out in front, kicking through the underbrush and hoping to spot whatever's hiding in it before it sees us. And the forest, well, that's where we get to hang out on a good day, if Tunare's willing and our luck is all paid up.

Imagine slogging for days through some nameless swamp, mud and weeds and things you'd rather not think about clogging every link in your chainmail, soaked to the bone, with a stone that feels like you could build a small keep on it stuck in your boot. Imagine swimming through this disgusting, brackish water with more than your own weight in armor and supplies strapped to your back. Imagine rising from the swamp with bow in hand, sending an arrow into the back of some wretched godsforsaken trollspawned freak of un-nature, then tossing off a quick spell to get the reeds and grasses to trip him up and slow him enough that you can leg it back to your party before it eats you. Imagine wading into the thick of the fight, hacking away with your blades, slamming the thing with your magic, and getting half the life torn out of you in the process, only to hear the warrior congratulated for his sword work and the wizard for his spells. Imagine your only thanks is being told to go do it again.

Does that sound appealing? Does that sound like the life for you? Better yet, does that sound exactly like what you were doing just yesterday?

Then maybe you're in the right place after all.

The Ranger - 11:02 AM PDT
Ilmarinen, the wandering wood elf, has finally reported in from Rivervale with news of the starting armor and weapon quests for halfling rangers. So if you're new to the short, round, and hairy-footed set, and would like to know what your elders in the Storm Reapers have lined up for you, take a look at the newly updated halfling section of the Ranger Portal's Newbie Quest Guide.

Thanks also go to Giffwin and Boairius of Rivervale (on the Karana server) for their assistance.

New Ranger Guide
Return to TopSubmit News!Comment on this article
The Ranger - 8:12 PM PDT
The first installment of a comprehensive guide to the armor and weapon quests available to new rangers has just been posted in the Ranger Portal. If you're a wood elf working on your ranger newbie quests, or are considering starting a career with the Faydark's Champions, then go take a look at this guide.

Other sections of this guide, detailing the item recipes, statistics, and tips for hunting the materials you'll need, will be added for the other ranger races soon. Ilmarinen the ranger is even now working with Megosh Thistlethorn and the rest of the Storm Reapers of Rivervale to gather information about the halfling ranger quests. When his work there is finished, he'll depart immediately for Surefall Glade.

If you'd like to help, if you have completed some or all of these quests, you're quite welcome to email any information you might have—item statistics and resource-gathering tips would be most appreciated—to anchor@stratics.com. You will, of course, receive full credit in the finished guide.

Thanks, and good hunting to you!

Wood Elf Newbie Quests Have Arrived!
Return to TopSubmit News!Comment on this article
The Ranger - 3:36 PM PDT
That's right, at long last the Fier'Dal have their own set of newbie armor quests! Young wood elf rangers need but speak with Samatansyn Flamecaller in the Faydark's Champions guild hall for instructions for the crafting of Trueshot Chainmail. Doubtless the other wood elf classes have their own armor quests as well, so all new elves should check their guild halls straight away!

Additionally, Cerila Windrider in the Faydark's Champions hall has new information regarding mithril boned leather, mithril chainmail, a new Faydark Bow, and new Faydark Arrows, for the more advanced rangers. As you've probably already guessed, these require mithril ore, so they'll be a tad pricey for the younger rangers.

Patch Day!
Return to TopSubmit News!Comment on this article
The Ranger - 8:50 AM PDT
Get ready to stare at a progress bar, folks: it's patch day! There are two much-anticipated patches to download today, one that includes the new user interface and the Luclin Bazaar, and another that brings Jaggedpine Forest, one of the Legends zones, to Live servers. Both are immense downloads, so be prepared to be patient.

There isn't much of specific interest to rangers in the default patch, just a notice that Shissar-Bane Bows should now be functioning properly. The new user interface and the long-awaited appearance of something useful to do in the Bazaar, however, should make rangers just as happy as everyone else. The patch message gives instructions for getting both of these working:

To activate the new interface:

* Log into the game.
* Type /newui into the chat bar and hit enter.
* Log out and exit to your desktop and then log back in.

or

* Before you log in:
* Open the EQclient.ini file in your EverQuest folder with a text editor (notepad works fine)
* Find the [Defaults] section of the file
* Add a line that reads: NewUI=TRUE
* Log in

And for the Bazaar:

/bazaar opens up the Bazaar Search Window, which allows you to easily locate specific items for sale by Traders in the Bazaar. /trader opens up the Bazaar Vendor window, which allows you to make items available for sale to others in the Bazaar.

You can only use the Bazaar if you have the new interface turned on. See the message above for details.

There is also an interesting section on News from Faydwer:

It is rumored that the major cities of Faydwer have announced a call to arms for all young adventurers. News of mysterious bloodthirsty goblins to the west setting up encampments has prompted all residents of Kaladim, Kelethin and Felwithe to all begin preparing themselves for what they think may be a momentous battle. Intelligence originating from the Scouts of Kaladim and Kelethin has informed their respective leaders of a possible alliance between a mysterious aqua goblin tribe and the Orcs of Clan Crushbone. Due to the possibility of an attack by either or both of these powerful tribes, guildmasters of all cities have begun the training of young soldiers brave enough to heed the call to defend their homeland against all unknown creatures and new inhabitants.

I'll have Ilmarinen the ranger take a trip back home to the Faydark as soon as I can log in today (the login server is incredibly congested right now), and I'll let you know what I can learn about these new foes of Faydwer. This might herald the arrival of newbie armor quests for wood elves at long last, or at the very least something new to fight when you're tired of beating up the Crushbone orcs.

Finally, the optional patch (accessed by clicking the Advanced button on the patch download interface) holds something of great interest to rangers and other woodsy types: the Jaggedpine Forest zone! From what I've heard, this should be a great spot for rangers and druids of low to mid-range levels to hunt in the sort of large, open forest we've all wanted to see for so long. I'll also send Ilmarinen to investigate this new zone (and to ask the Jaggedpine Treefolk where they've been hiding their forest all these years), and I'll let you know what he finds out.

So there you have it: big patches, very interesting, lots of new changes, and even a few exciting new things for the rangers! So get started downloading, folks!

Welcome!

The Ranger - 6:09 PM PDT
Greetings all, and welcome to the new Ranger Class Portal! I'll be your guide through this slightly muddy corner of the EverQuest Stratics world. In the coming weeks, I'll be bringing you news, guides, and the like... and hopefully a few of you will want to do the same! We also have a fascinating new plan in the works, one that will provide a way for people (and not just Stratics staff) to post their tales of adventure and strategies for advancement here in the Ranger Portal.

If you have any questions or comments, would like to help out around here, or just want to say hi (or ask me to shoot that pesky orc who’s been chasing you across the Faydark), you have a fair assortment of ways to contact me. You can email me, post or send me a private message through the Ranger Forum, send me a small scribbled note via carrier pigeon, or look for me in EverQuest, where I play the ranger Ilmarinen on the Karana server.

And for now, don't mind the mess. As a ranger you'll have to get used to a little mud. It's in the job description.
